Memory Monday #6

I missed last week...not because I didn't have a memory, but because I was in the middle of deciding to make this blog private and transfer everything over here. No worries...the memories are back!

This week, I have a question for my dad and siblings: What did Mom teach us to do when we traveled in the car for any distance? Please leave your answers in the comments section and I will update this post in a few days. Since we took a road trip to Utah this week, and I realized that my children have been trained in true Rita Heywood fashion, I wondered if my memories of traveling with Mom are the same as yours?

  1. Snacks! We needed snacks and water (which I think harkens back to Grandma Mellor and the 1 quart Ball jar full of good old Fayette spring water tucked safely under the seat). Also, I remember Dramamine for the car sick boys and activities to keep us busy. Traveling at night so we would sleep and trying to get dad to stop more than once to use the restroom and re-stock on snacks!

  2. The night traveling. We would shedule our trips to leave late in the afternoon so that the kids would go to sleep and not bother dad as he drove. The snacks were a must but had the down side effect that potty stops were more frequent. As I remember books for the girls were good to keep them occupied for a time. The boys just fought hence the most important aspect FEAR!!! If you didn't behave you got to get out and walk. Hence the memory of the boys fighting in the back of the van and haveing to get out between Delta and Ely and walk. For your mean old dad Fear was a great motivator. Don't necessarily recommend it but as a last resort it comes in handy. I remember Tim liked to get me talking about my life experiences. I remember spending many hours talking to him and who ever else was listening telling about the things I'd seen and done.

  3. Rob swears to this day that he had to walk for miles and miles in his socks!

  4. Regardless of what everyone thinks, it WAS at LEAST 2 miles. I remember traveling alot at night. It was nice because we would go to sleep, wake up and we're there. I remember Dad reading a book while driving, and you had to be peeing your pants to get Dad to stop. The man is a machine. I remember Mom getting her only ticket speeding on the way to Fallon when we moved from Utah. I'm grateful we did so much traveling. I has served me well the past couple of years.
